Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions our Chicago  and its suburbs clients ask, from filing and ITINs to IRS notices and year-round support.

Getting Started / General Tax Prep

What documents do I need to file my taxes?
Most clients need a photo ID, Social Security number or ITIN, W-2s or 1099s, and last year's tax return if available. Our Vohra Tax team will tell you exactly what applies to your situation before your appointment, so there's no guesswork.
How much does tax preparation cost?
Cost depends on how complex your return is, a simple individual return costs less than a business return with multiple schedules. We recommend visiting your nearest Vohra Tax location for a proper quote based on your specific situation.
When are Illinois and federal taxes due?
The federal and Illinois state filing deadline is typically April 15, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday. Our team can also help you file for an extension if you need more time.
Can I file taxes without a Social Security number?
Yes. If you don't qualify for a Social Security Number, you can file using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead. Vohra Tax helps clients apply for and renew ITINs as part of the filing process.

Individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)

What is an ITIN and who needs one?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is issued by the IRS to people who need to file a tax return but don't qualify for a Social Security Number. Vohra Tax helps individuals and families apply for a new ITIN or renew an expiring one.
How long does it take to get an ITIN?
ITIN applications typically take the IRS several weeks to process after submission. We prepare your application and tax return together to avoid delays and common rejection reasons.
Does filing taxes with an ITIN affect my immigration status?
Filing taxes is a separate process from immigration enforcement, and many people file with an ITIN regardless of status. Our team can walk you through what filing involves so you feel informed, not anxious, about the process. (For anything beyond general tax guidance, we recommend speaking with an immigration attorney.)

IRS Notices, Audits & Representation

I received a letter from the IRS, what should I do?
Don't ignore it, most IRS letters have a response deadline. Bring the notice to our office and our team will review it with you, explain what it means, and help you respond correctly.
Can you help if I'm being audited?
Yes. Vohra Tax assists with audit preparation, document gathering, and communicating with the IRS on your behalf, so you're not navigating it alone.
What happens if I can't pay my full tax bill?
The IRS offers payment plans and other options depending on your situation. Our team can help you understand what you qualify for and set up a plan that works.

Bookkeeping & Payroll

Do I need a bookkeeper if I already use accounting software?
Software helps you record transactions, but a bookkeeper makes sure they're categorized correctly and your books are audit-ready. Vohra Tax offers ongoing bookkeeping so your records stay accurate year-round, not just at tax time.
How often should my business do payroll?
Most small businesses run payroll weekly, biweekly, or semi-monthly, depending on state rules and employee agreements. We help set up a payroll schedule and keep it compliant and error-free.
What's the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
A bookkeeper tracks day-to-day transactions, while an accountant analyzes that data for tax planning and financial decisions. Vohra Tax offers both, so your records and your filing are always in sync.
